About the School of Physics at Georgia Tech

The School of Physics has 50 faculty members, including eight non-tenure track, and its graduate program is ranked 21st nationally. The School excels in areas like astrophysics, condensed matter physics, and more. It also plays a major role in interdisciplinary fields such as quantum systems and data science. We have over 130 graduate students and 300 undergraduate Physics majors.

Job Summary

The School of Physics is looking for an Open-Rank Academic Professional or Senior Academic Professional (Non-Tenure Track) to focus on teaching, outreach, and advising in astronomy and astrophysics. This role involves:

  • Teaching three courses per year and helping develop the curriculum.
  • Advising undergraduate students in physics and/or astrophysics.
  • Managing the rooftop observatory, including upgrading it as needed.
  • Creating public outreach programs using the observatory and other resources.
  • Potentially teaching advanced labs and developing TA (Teaching Assistant) courses.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field is required.
  • For Academic Professional rank: Significant experience or promotion from an Associate Academic Professional, with recognition from peers.
  • For Senior Academic Professional rank: Proven superior performance, peer recognition, and at least five years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in student advising and mentoring.
  • Competence in teaching introductory astronomy/astrophysics.
  • Experience with observational techniques and public outreach using small telescopes.
